Five Copywriting Strategies

Copywriting is one of the most leveragable aspects of your business. If you are wanting greater results from your business quickly, it is without doubt one of the best places to start.

Following are five strategies that are particularly useful for business-starters:

  1. Pace yourself. Most people are outcome orientated. Hence they want jobs ticked off and implemented as fast as possible. It's common that in the haste to finish jobs, attention to detail is a price paid.

At increments throughout a project, just stop for a moment to review what you've done to ensure you've covered everything and it's in line with your project plan.

  1. Put process before content. This means planning first. Before you jump head first into the job, plan it through in detail. They call this "sharpening the saw", as it is analogous to sharpening a saw before cutting down a tree. By spending 10 minutes sharpening (planning), you'll cut with a sharp saw and reduce the overall time taken.

To do this, step yourself through the entire process. Go through the process from your own perspective, and then from the perspective of other people that will be impacted by it. Develop the frame first, before thinking about the content.

Example - If you are writing a document this means planning the logical progression of the document (or project) first, writing down headlines that relate to this logic, and only then filling out the document with succinct content.

The structure and flow of your documents is significantly more important than the content. Don't ever try to overcome poor planning and flow with content. Readers simply will not relate.

  1. Put yourself in your prospect's frame. You never do a project for you. You always do a project for the reader or user. So never think in terms of your frame of reference. You must think in your prospect's frame of reference to be able to communicate effectively with them.

Example - Again in document writing, talk in their language, use logic they understand, use examples they can relate to.

  1. Cut down on verbiage. Your writing should relate through emotion where possible and this is best done with images and frames. Your writing needs to be clear and succinct. You should aim to keep your sentences short. Cut down on the use of extra verbs.

Example - Rather than writing "this product will dramatically and extensively skyrocket your understanding and ability to relate to..." simply write "your understanding will be vastly enhanced through the use of real life examples." Also cut down on words like "that"; "will"; "in order to"; etc.

  1. Check and Re-Check. You must check and re-check your work. And again, to be effective at this you need to step outside your frame into the prospects you are trying to reach. You must check structure and flow, as well as content. If possible, it often helps to leave a document sitting for a few days and then come back to it. You'll find reading it again will give you greater perspective.

Gro.www. Your Business

When you start coaching, it's very important that firstly you gain confidence - confidence in your abilities, confidence in your offer to clients, and confidence in the coaching process. This confidence is only going to be attained by actually coaching!

We therefore advocate that in the initial stages of your business you coach as much as possible - this may be obvious to you. Once you are confident, you can look into some strategies to grow your business. Below are four (effective and generally non-costly) strategies to aid the growth of your business via the Web.

  1. Develop and maintain a client database: As soon as you start your coaching business you should record all prospective and existing clients in a database. This database will become one of your most valuable business resources.

It will allow you to easily communicate with groups, follow-up unconverted prospects, market added-value services, re-sell services, profile clients and much, much more. A proven and efficient way to develop a client database is via an online free eZine subscription system from your Blog or website.

  1. Host/Beneficiary marketing: Defined simply 'host/beneficiary marketing' is where you communicate with a non-competing business that has clients on their database that may be predisposed to use your service.

On the Web there are hundreds of professionals and companies looking for affiliates; and there is no better place for affiliate marketing than the Internet. A good way to ascertain what businesses may be appropriate to contact regarding a host/beneficiary relationship is to ask these 3 simple questions:

    1. Who has your clients before you?
    2. Who has your clients after you?
    3. What other products and services do the majority of your clients use?

Once you answer these questions you'll have a good basis for which business you can contact.

    1. Publications: As a new coach, one of the most powerful means to build your business is through publications. Many new coaches, particularly coaches with a specific niche specialty, regularly write and publish articles. A good goal for a coach starting out is to write two articles per month for their first year of coaching.

    These articles can be disseminated through specialist submission services, such as http://ezinearticles.com, to hundreds of online and offline publishers. In fact, many offline publishers now conduct the majority of their research online.

    So if you can get your articles published online (and if they're of value - well constructed, researched, validated and original), there's an excellent chance they'll be getting published in offline publications as well.

    1. Blogging: A Blog is a Web Log or a Web Journal. It's basically an automated website (there are hundreds of free tools and templates available on the web) that's used as a journal to put your ideas, thoughts and beliefs.

    So, how can a coach use a Blog to assist build their business?

      1. People with common beliefs and/or interests congregate in Blogs. You can therefore use Blogs to establish online communities and target your niche markets;
      2. Blogs allow you to freely express your beliefs and create a signature presence on the web;
      3. A Blog is a good forum to conduct subtle research on your market;
      4. Having reciprocal links with your website and Blog assists build your profile, generate additional traffic and improve the likelihood of being found.

    The Richest Man of Babylon

    "The Richest Man in Babylon is a book by George Samuel Clason which dispenses financial advice through a collection of parables set in ancient Babylon. Through their experiences in business and managing household finance, the characters in the parables learn simple lessons in financial wisdom.

    By basing these parables in ancient times, but involving situations that modern people can understand and identify with, the author presents these lessons as timeless wisdom that is as relevant today as it was back then."

    Utilising the Power of Planning

    "When it comes to the future, there are three kinds of people: those who let it happen, those who make it happen, and those who wonder what happened." John M. Richardson Jr.

    One of the most powerful tools for overcoming procrastination and increasing productivity is planning. Every minute spent on planning can save up to 10 minutes in execution. Planning needn't be time consuming or complicated.  It does however need to be regular. Plan everyday in advance and watch your productivity and performance soar.

    Planning begins by creating lists. With all of the technology available today (such as palm pilots or electronic organisers) it can be easy to forget that a simple list can be a vital planning tool. It is important to always work from a list. When something comes up, add it to the list before doing it. You can increase your productivity by 25% from the first day you begin working consistently from a list.

    Many people find it helpful to create a variety of lists from which they plan. A popular and well regarded planning system involves the use of four key lists:  Master list; Monthly list; Weekly list and Daily list.

    Your Master list contains everything you wish to accomplish sometime in the future. This is the brainstorm list where you can capture all of your thoughts and ideas. Any thing at all that you would like to do should be included on this list.

    Your Monthly list is made up of all of those things that you would like to achieve within the month. Some of these items may have been transferred from your Master list.

    Your Weekly list is a record of all those tasks that you will accomplish within the week. This list may, of course contain items that have been transferred from your Monthly list.

    Similarly, your Daily list includes all those items and activities that you are going to achieve within the day. As you progress through the items on your list, your sense of progress and accomplishment will become almost tangible, creating a sense of momentum and dramatically increasing your effectiveness.

    Lists should be continually evolving and changing. It may be helpful to create a routine around list creation. Set aside some time every evening to clearly plan your next day. When you plan each day in advance you will find it much easier to get going and keep going. You may be amazed at the results.
